1. What is The Pursuit School of Sport?
The Pursuit School of Sport is a flexible learning sport school that allows students to balance their academic studies with intensive sports training and competitions. The school schedule is adjusted to support student-athletes in achieving both their educational and athletic goals. The program incorporates a flexible in-person learning option, ensuring students stay on track with curriculum requirements while pursuing their athletic ambitions.
2. Who is this school designed for?
The school is ideal for elite or aspiring high-level athletes who require flexibility in their academic schedule due to training, travel, or competitions taking place during the regular school day. It caters to students committed to excelling in their chosen sport while maintaining academic progress.
3. How does the flexible schedule work?
The schedule is customized to accommodate training and competition times. Students may:
- Attend classes at adjusted times.
- Access online learning materials (Google Classroom).
- Have support from teachers to catch up on missed lessons.
- Benefit from a four-day school week with Fridays off for travel and competitions. In the 2025/2026 school year, there are only three scheduled Fridays due to Monday holidays (September 5, October 17 and May 22).
4. How is The Pursuit School of Sport different from online/distance learning?
Some key features that make this model different than others:
- Hybrid Delivery: Combines face-to-face instruction, online modules, and self-directed learning.
- Support Structures: Support student-athletes through flexible deadlines, teacher support, or alternative schedules.
- Focus on Accessibility: Designed to accommodate students who might struggle in traditional school settings due to training schedules, competition dates, and other athletic commitments.
5. If my student is registered in an LPSD Academy, can they attend the Pursuit School of Sport?
No, students who are registered in an LPSD Academy will continue to attend their home schools. The Pursuit School of Sport is separate and designed specifically for elite or aspiring high-level athletes who require flexible academic schedules due to daytime training, travel, or competitions. LPSD Academies will continue to operate as normal, with students leaving their home schools to participate in Academy activities. The two programs are distinct and operate independently of each other.
6. Will my child still receive a quality education?
Yes. The program adheres to Saskatchewan curriculum standards and ensures students receive a high-quality education. Teachers strive to support flexible learning while maintaining academic rigour.
7. How does the school monitor academic progress?
Regular assessments, progress reports, and teacher feedback help keep students on track. Individualized learning plans support addressing any areas needing improvement.
8. What sports are supported in the program?
Any athlete striving to be elite with a training program that requires training during the school day can be supported. The program is not sport-specific but is athlete-specific. The Pursuit School of Sport is designed for individual or team sports requiring flexible schedules.
9. Are there any requirements to enroll?
Yes. Students must demonstrate a commitment to both academics and sports. Admission may include reviewing academic performance, sports commitments, and teacher recommendations. Student participation in the program will be reviewed annually.
10. What happens if my child’s sports commitments change?
The program is adaptable. If a student’s training or competition schedule changes, the learning plan can be adjusted to maintain a balance between academics and sports.
11. Are there additional costs for the program? When can I register?
There is a fee of $500 to cover regular school fees, outside facility costs, specialized resources, outside experts and presenters, and school clothing provided to every student. Registration for The Pursuit School of Sport will be opening in February.
12. How can parents stay involved in their child’s progress?
Parents can stay connected through:
- Regular parent-teacher meetings
- Online portals for academic updates (Edsby)
- Communication with teachers and school administration
13. How does the school handle absences due to competitions or training?
Absences are anticipated and supported through the following:
- Flexible deadlines for assignments
- Recorded lessons or online resources
- Teacher support or catch-up sessions
14. What benefits will my child see by attending The Pursuit School of Sport?
- Tailored programming based on your child’s training schedule;
- The smaller school size fosters closer bonds among students and staff, creating a supportive environment focused on the student-athlete experience;
- Academics are prioritized alongside athletics, working with community organizations to help athletes succeed in both areas;
- Easier access to mentorship from older athletes and school staff who have lived the student-athlete experience themselves.
15. What does student transportation look like for this school?
Transportation to and from the school will be provided via LPSD current school bus routes. Any transportation needed to and from training locations is the responsibility of the student’s family or the training facility.
16. Will my child have access to electives like band, art, and shop?
The Pursuit School of Sport focuses on core academics and flexibility for athletic training, so some elective courses requiring consistent in-person attendance, like band or shop, may not be available. Depending on training schedules, some electives at the Lloydminster Comprehensive High School may be an option.
17. Can my child still participate in extracurricular activities outside of their sport? Can they join school sports teams?
We are meeting with NWHSSA and SHSAA to confirm that students attending The Pursuit School of Sport will be able to participate in extracurricular leagues outside their primary sport if they manage their schedules effectively. The school encourages balance and will work with students to integrate additional interests or activities into their learning plans.
18. What if my child wants to transfer back to a traditional school?
The Pursuit School of Sport ensures that students meet all Saskatchewan curriculum standards, making it possible to transition back to a traditional school setting if desired. The program’s individualized learning plans and academic monitoring provide continuity in their education.
